Small Businesses Are Rethinking Finance as Lenders Get More Selective

Cash flow, tax obligations and equipment needs are shaping a more disciplined borrowing market

Small Businesses Are Rethinking Finance as Lenders Get More Selective?w=400

Australian small businesses appear to be entering a more selective phase of borrowing, with recent lending industry updates pointing to stronger demand for practical, purpose-led finance rather than broad expansion debt.
Instead of simply asking how much they can borrow, many owners are now focusing on whether a facility will protect cash flow, support revenue and withstand closer lender scrutiny.

The shift matters because lender appetite has not disappeared, but the quality of an application is becoming more important. Businesses seeking working capital, vehicle finance, equipment funding or help restructuring short-term obligations are likely to face detailed questions about trading performance, bank statement conduct, tax positions and existing debt commitments. For sole traders and self-employed applicants, this can make preparation just as important as the rate itself.

One practical trend is the continued appeal of asset-backed finance. Where the loan is tied to a vehicle, machinery or equipment, lenders may have a clearer view of the purpose of funds and the security behind the transaction. That does not guarantee approval or a lower cost, but it can help align the finance structure with the asset’s useful life and the borrower’s business plan.

Working capital remains more nuanced. A short-term cash flow facility may be useful where invoices are delayed, seasonal costs are rising or stock needs to be purchased ahead of demand. However, it can become expensive if used to cover ongoing losses or unresolved budget gaps. Before applying, businesses should model cash flow, estimate repayments and test whether the proposed loan still makes sense if revenue is slower than expected.

Tax debt and arrears are also playing a larger role in credit assessments. Lenders may consider whether a business has an ATO payment arrangement, whether repayments are up to date and whether new finance will genuinely improve the position. Owners should be ready to explain the cause of any arrears and show how future obligations will be managed.

For borrowers, the message is constructive but disciplined: finance is still available, yet applications need to be well matched to the business case. Clear records, current financials, realistic borrowing amounts and a defined use of funds can improve the chances of being taken seriously. Where the situation is complex, experienced finance brokers can help compare lender policies and identify which products are more likely to suit the business before an application is submitted.

ATO arrears can really spook lenders, even with steady work, so getting a payment plan sorted before applying seems sensible.
